How to Add Text to a GIF Without Flattening the Animation

Upload a GIF, place a readable caption and preserve frame timing while exporting a new animated file.

Adding a caption to an animated GIF requires more than editing its first frame. A GIF can contain small frame patches, different playback delays and instructions for what should remain visible between frames. A captioning tool needs to reconstruct that animation and place text over every displayed frame.

Choose the right starting tool

Use Add Text to GIF when you already have the animation. It accepts a GIF upload and adds one caption layout throughout the loop. Use the text GIF maker when you want to create a new animation from words on a background.

The upload tool does not recover editable lettering already baked into an image. If a reaction GIF has an existing caption, adding a new one will not automatically erase the old text. It also does not convert MP4 video into GIF or create a timed subtitle track with different sentences.

Check the source file before uploading

Confirm that the file is a real GIF, not a video or a still image with a renamed extension. The current limits are 5 MB, a maximum of 720 pixels on either side, five seconds and 120 image frames. The decoded frame budget is 32 million pixels. A file can be small on disk but still contain many large frames, so compressed size is not the only limit.

Trim or resize a source that exceeds these limits before uploading. Keep the original file as a backup. Upload only material you have permission to edit and share with the service. The file is processed for this export and is not published in a public gallery or retained as uploaded media.

Find a caption position that stays clear

Watch the whole loop before choosing top, center or bottom. A face that begins near the bottom may move upward, or a product may rotate through the space where you planned to put text. Choose the position that remains readable through the changing action.

Keep the caption short enough that it does not cover the subject. A single phrase usually works better than a paragraph. Put explanatory detail in the surrounding post. This version uses position presets rather than free dragging, and the caption remains present throughout the animation.

Set readable type and color

A bold font is a practical starting point for a small reaction image. White text with the tool’s dark outline can separate the letters from many backgrounds, but it is not universally readable. Check both the brightest and darkest portions of the source. If the image is very busy, a different position or shorter phrase may help more than another color.

The exporter uses bundled fonts for supported Latin and Chinese characters, numbers and punctuation. Review spelling and names before generating. Unsupported characters are reported before billing. The preview lets you compare the caption with the original motion without spending credits.

Understand what the export preserves

The exporter applies frame disposal rules before compositing the caption. It keeps the source canvas dimensions within the supported limits and retains individual frame delays, using a minimum of 20 milliseconds for extremely short delays. This avoids treating every source frame as if it had the same duration.

The output is still a new GIF encoding. Its color palette may differ from the original, so some shades and antialiased edges can change. GIF also has only binary transparency, not smooth partial alpha. Compare the downloaded result with your source if subtle colors or transparent edges matter.

Generate and inspect the captioned GIF

Sign in and generate for two credits. The one-time welcome grant covers one export across all tools. A failed render does not charge. If the connection is interrupted, retry the same request rather than changing settings and starting a different export.

Download the result before leaving the page. Open it and watch the complete loop, checking that the caption is visible, the original action remains animated and the timing feels right. Then test the file in the destination app. If it is too large, see the file-size guide. If you actually need moving lettering rather than a fixed caption, return to Sliding Text GIF or Typing Text GIF.
